About the Event
Join us in celebrating Pearl Harbor survivor David Russell as he marks his 106th birthday.
David Russell is the last living survivor of the USS Oklahoma. On December 7, 1941, he was serving as a Seaman First Class and was heading topside when Japanese torpedo planes began their attack. As the ship came under fire, Russell started to go below deck but changed his mind at the last moment. He climbed over the ship's side, jumped, and grabbed a rope hanging from the nearby USS Maryland, which was moored alongside.
That split-second decision likely saved his life. Moments later, the USS Oklahoma capsized, trapping many of the crew below deck who were unable to escape.
Russell continued his service in the U.S. Navy until his retirement in 1960. Today, we honor his courage, resilience, and service to our nation.
Please join us in wishing David Russell a very happy 106th birthday!
