Rockfall Mitigation Improves Visitor Safety and Access to Iconic Landmark
HONOLULU (July 13, 2025) – Pacific Historic Parks (PHP), in partnership with the Hawai‘i State Parks Division, is pleased to announce that the Rockfall Mitigation Project at Diamond Head State Monument has been completed ahead of schedule, with regular visiting hours scheduled to resume tomorrow.
The project, which began earlier this year, focused on stabilizing loose rocks around the Kāhala Tunnel entering Diamond Head crater to improve visitor safety. Originally scheduled to continue through the end of July, the work was completed today.
Diamond Head State Monument will resume normal operating hours tomorrow, Monday, July 14, 2025. Visitors can once again enjoy full access to one of Hawaii’s most iconic landmarks from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, except on Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year’s Day (January 1), when the park is closed.
“We’re grateful to our visitors and the community for their patience during this important safety project,” said Aileen Utterdyke, President and CEO of Pacific Historic Parks. “Completing the work ahead of schedule allows everyone to enjoy Diamond Head’s iconic views and rich history without disruption to those visiting.”
The project was part of ongoing efforts to maintain and preserve Diamond Head State Monument for future generations while ensuring the safety of all visitors.
