HONOLULU – The National Park Service (NPS) is accepting input from the public from September 4 to October 4 to develop ideas for NPS-managed sites on Ford Island.
The Ford Island sites include six chief petty officer bungalows, and the USS Oklahoma and USS Utah memorials. These sites honor the events and people connected to the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, which resulted in the U.S. entering World War II.
The Ford Island NPS Sites Management Plan is expected to guide actions and decisions for the bungalows and memorials on Ford Island. “We look forward to hearing ideas from stakeholders, partners, and the public,” said Tom Leatherman, superintendent of Pearl Harbor National Memorial. “This engagement will help tremendously in developing and building this plan.”
The National Park Service will hold an in-person open house at Pearl Harbor National Memorial, located at 1 Arizona Memorial Place in Honolulu, on September 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. The following day, the park will host two virtual sessions on Microsoft Teams, from 10 to 11 am and 5 to 6 pm.
Visitors can also submit comments on the Planning, Environment and Public Comment site at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/FordIslandPlan or by sending written comments to Pearl Harbor National Memorial (Attn: Superintendent), 1 Arizona Memorial Place, Honolulu, HI 96818.
Project updates will be posted to the Planning, Environment and Public Comment site at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/FordIslandPlan.
Members of the public are also welcome to reach out to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Superintendent at PERL_Superintendent@nps.gov.
