Due to maintenance work being performed on the Memorial, boat tours will be suspended on February 10. That means no tickets will be given out and no one can visit the Memorial that day. However, the Visitor Center, museum, and bookstore will be open all day, 7 am – 5 pm. The NPS amended the above recently; stating that they will be offering boat tours of Battleship Row with an interpretative Park Ranger on board the shuttle boat. This means that tickets will still be given out for the shuttle boats, they will just not be docking at the Memorial. The act required that all men between the ages of 21 and 35 register with local draft boards.

On October 16, 1940, registration day, over 16 million men sign up to serve. After the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, millions more American men and women swelled the United States’ military ranks, either volunteering to serve or through conscription.

Pacific Historic Parks appreciates all of the men and women who have served our country and those who are still wearing their uniforms proudly with courage, integrity and honor.

Shortly after the end of the war, the National Archives produced an exhibition entitled, “The End of the War in the Pacific: Surrender Documents in Facsimile,” which put on public view for the first time many of the documents related to the Japanese surrender on board the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. Included is the surrender document itself as well as Emperor Hirohito’s imperial rescript, or decree, and credentials of some of the Japanese signatories. Of interest is the photograph showing General Wainwright, the man who surrendered Corregidor to the Japanese, officially opening the exhibition.
